Understanding Texas' Deregulated Electricity Market

Since 2002, Texas businesses in deregulated markets have had the power to choose their electricity provider. This deregulation created competition among an extensive network of retail electricity providers (REPs), all competing for your business. This competition drives down prices and improves service—but only if you know how to navigate the market.

What is ERCOT?

The Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) manages the flow of electric power to 26 million Texas customers—representing about 90% of the state's electric load. ERCOT operates the state's electricity grid and wholesale market, ensuring reliable power delivery 24/7.

In ERCOT's deregulated markets, you can choose your retail electricity provider while your local Transmission and Distribution Utility (TDU) continues to deliver power and maintain the physical infrastructure. This separation of services creates competition and choice.

Deregulated vs. Regulated Areas

Deregulated Areas: Houston, Dallas, Fort Worth, Austin, San Antonio (partial), Corpus Christi, Midland, Odessa, Abilene, Waco, College Station, and most of Central and East Texas. In these areas, you can choose your electricity provider.

Regulated Areas: El Paso, parts of the Texas Panhandle, East Texas (near Louisiana border), and some rural areas. These areas are served by traditional utilities with regulated rates. We can still help businesses in these areas, though options are more limited.

Why Use a Broker?
  • Access to All Providers: We compare rates from extensive network of providers, including wholesale and private label options not available to the public.
  • Negotiating Power: Our volume gives us leverage to negotiate better rates and terms than individual businesses can secure.
  • Market Expertise: We monitor market conditions daily and know when to lock in rates to maximize your savings.
  • Time Savings: We handle all research, comparison, paperwork, and coordination—saving you dozens of hours.
  • Zero Cost: Our service is completely free. We're compensated by providers, not by you.

Multi-Location Businesses

Do you operate multiple locations across Texas? We specialize in multi-site electricity management. We can consolidate your accounts, negotiate volume discounts, coordinate renewals, and provide centralized billing and reporting across all your Texas locations.
